Hope-filled Alaskans glorifying God by leading healthy families and communities.
Tanalian Bible Camp exists to build up the Body of Christ in rural Alaska by providing evangelism, discipleship, fellowship and leadership development through camps, conferences and Biblical mentoring.
Tanalian Bible Camp – 50 Years in Southwest Alaska
Don and Lorene Stump started Iliamna Teen Camp in 1963 in Iliamna, Alaska. It began as a week long high school camp in the summer and a family conference in the spring. The Stumps, partnered with Chuck and Barbara Crapuchettes and Dan and Sharon O’Hara, all had the desire to reach the youth in the Lake Country for Jesus Christ. They decided the most effective way to do this was through Christian camping.
Without an adequate location, the Iliaska Lodge, owned by a friend, was used to run camp and conference. As the camp grew it was evident it needed its own place. In December 1973, Babe Alsworth gave the camp a 99-year lease on an 80-acre plot in Port Alsworth, so Iliamna Teen Camp moved and became known as Tanalian Bible Camp
It didn’t take long for the camp to grow and soon there were three weeks of camp sharing the hope of Christ through the gospel to children from third grade through 19 years old. Currently, there are seven weeks of summer camp, and a men’s Leadership Raft Camp, high school winter camp, and spring and fall conferences. Tanalian strives to remain true to being a camp primarily for Native Alaskan youth across the rural villages of Southwest Alaska.
The Tanalian Bible Camp Board of Directors long desired to develop a mentoring program during the school year that would provide Biblical teaching and offer career development for Native Alaskan young adults in the villages across Southwest Alaska. In 2011 as a response to this, Tanalian Bible Camp developed the sub-ministry known as the Tanalian Leadership Center. It is a place where Native Alaskan young men and women are challenged to grow in every area of their lives. The dynamic atmosphere of Biblical studies, career development and community mentoring offer continual opportunities for personal transformation. We ultimately believe that it is Jesus Christ who changes a person from the heart. Each student will be transformed proportionally to his or her individual desire to be more like Christ. Our desire is to see these students become leaders helping create healthy communities in Southwest Alaska.
